While the Smart Splitter is most commonly used to share an appliance and an EV charger, the device is not limited to specific applications but is instead intended to be a broad-purpose 240V circuit splitter.

Common Use Cases:

  1. Appliance + EV
  2. Dual EV
  3. Multiple Appliance
  4. On the Road (Portable EV Charging Access)
  5. Other (DIY Builds and Tiny Homes)

1.) Appliance + EV 

The most common use case of the Smart Splitter is for sharing an existing appliance with an EV charger. "Appliances" is a broad term that includes almost all 240V plug-in devices:

  • Dryer
  • Electric Range/Oven
  • Air Conditioner
  • Heat Pump
  • Water Heater
  • Welding equipment
  • Compressor
  • Sauna
  • Hot Tubs
  • Electric Fence
  • Pottery kilns

In just about all of these applications, the Appliance will be plugged into the Primary side to take priority over the EV charger plugged into the Secondary.

NOTE: If you are using a 30A circuit breaker, you will want to ensure that your EV charger has adjustable amperage capabilities to be set to 24A or less.

2.) Dual EV

The other everyday use case of the Smart Splitter is plugging in two EV chargers for dual EV charging. This is most commonly done with the NEMA 14-50 model which allows for the chargers to plug in directly without the need for an adapter.

3.) Multiple Appliance

Although most of our users use the Smart Splitter for EV charging, this is by no means a requirement for using the Smart Splitter. We have hundreds of users who use the device to share power among multiple appliances. 

If you are looking to use the Splitter in this manner, a common question we get is which appliance should get plugged into the Primary vs Secondary. As a general rule of thumb, the Primary side device should be the one that you need to manually turn on, and the Secondary should be the device that runs automatically.

This ensures that the Splitter provides power to the device you are actively using and won't allow the Secondary device to suddenly turn it off. For example, you wouldn't want your oven to suddenly lose power in the middle of cooking dinner because of your water heater turning on.

4.) On the Road (Portable EV Charging Access)

The Smart Splitter is a small device that can very easily be plugged in and moved around if needed. Several Smart Splitter users simply carry one around as a portable means of gaining EV charging access while on the road. If you are traveling to a location you know has a 240V outlet with another EV or appliance plugged in, you can easily bring a Smart Splitter with you to gain access to Level 2 charging as you travel.

This is a very common solution for RV owners who also own an EV and are often traveling and plugging into 240V at campgrounds.

Most common: If you are visiting someone with an EV who has a NEMA 14-50 plug-in charger, simply bring your Smart Splitter and a portable charger along for the ride and share the Level 2 charging. 

5.) Other (Tiny Homes / DIY Builds)

We are aware of a few dozen customers using the Smart Splitter in DIY builds such as tiny homes where the Smart Splitter is used to provide power to whole buildings through a single 240V line. We love seeing the creativity!
